The LBW Trust (Learning for a Better World) believes education is the pathway to a better future.
On September 25th, the picturesque lawns of the National Library of Australia transformed into a hub of energy and excitement as The LBW Trust, in collaboration with Cricket ACT, Cricket Australia, and the National Capital Authority, hosted the much-anticipated 2024 National Backyard Cricket Carnival.
This annual celebration brought together primary school children across the ACT for a day filled with cricket, learning and community spirit.
The National Library, a Venue Rich in Meaning
This year’s carnival marked a significant shift in location, moving from the elegant Governor-General’s residence to the iconic National Library of Australia. The choice of venue was deeply symbolic, reflecting The LBW Trust’s commitment to supporting libraries in regional Australia. By funding impactful grants and initiatives, the Trust has been a steadfast advocate for improving education in rural communities, particularly those with populations under 20,000.
Since 2021, The LBW Trust has supported 258 library projects across regional and rural Australia. Libraries, as cornerstones of knowledge and opportunity, resonate with the Trust’s mission to level the global educational playing field. Hosting the carnival at the National Library was a fitting tribute to this shared vision, seamlessly merging the transformative power of education with the unifying nature of cricket
A Day of Play, Learning and Connection
Months of meticulous planning culminated in a carnival brimming with energy and joy. Over 160 primary school children took to the field, their enthusiasm lighting up the day as they showcased their cricketing skills—batting, bowling, and fielding. The event wasn’t just about the game; it celebrated teamwork, inclusivity, and the connections that cricket fosters.
Despite occasional cloud cover, the rain held off, allowing uninterrupted play. Under Canberra’s ever-changing skies, the carnival provided a space where children could bond, learn, and create lasting memories, while embracing the shared goal of a brighter future through education.

This carnival demonstrated how sport can serve as a powerful tool for creating opportunities, inspiring learning and building stronger communities.
