The LBW Trust (Learning for a Better World) believes education is the pathway to a better future.

On August 2nd, 2024, The LBW Trust proudly hosted its inaugural Critical Conversations at the Critical Minerals, Mining and ESG Summit in partnership with the CCIWA. 

Held at award winning Sandalford Winery, this event brought together key figures from the mining industry, government and academia to explore how the wealth generated from critical minerals can be used to foster educational opportunities and build a more equitable future.

Hosted by David Koch and Keynote by Peter Dutton

The summit, hosted by David Koch, Executive Chairman of Pinstripe Media, brought a dynamic start to the day’s events. Koch’s extensive background in finance and media set the stage for a series of in-depth discussions on how sustainability, industry and education intersect.

The keynote address was delivered by Peter Dutton, Leader of the Opposition, who highlighted the significance of critical minerals in shaping Australia’s future. Dutton emphasised the importance of industry partnerships and the role of education in driving sustainable progress.

Adding to the energy of the day, Mark Readings, sports journalist and commentator, took on the role of auctioneer, leading a charity auction that raised funds for Western Australia’s rural libraries.

Global Perspectives with Norway Livestream

A key highlight of the summit was a livestream from Norway, where leading figures in the global mining industry shared their insights.

Anita Helene Hall, Secretary General of the Norwegian Mining Industry, along with Antony Beckmand and Mona Schanche from Kuniko, discussed the latest advancements in Norwegian mining and electrification. Their perspectives offered a global context to the sustainable mining practices being discussed in Australia.

Expert Panel Discussions

The day’s critical conversations were driven by leading experts from the mining, finance, and sustainability sectors. Panelists included:

  • Kevin Wan Lum, Deputy CIO at LGT Crestone Wealth
  • Aaron Morey, Chief Economist and Director of Strategy at CCIWA
  • Dr Andy Symington, Director of Human Rights and Social Impact at KPMG
  • Dr. Francis Wedin, Executive Chairman at Vulcan Energy Resources
  • Greg Thong, Director of Sustainable Corporate Solutions at Morningstar Sustainalytics
  • Scott Hargreaves, Executive Director at the Institute of Public Affairs
  • Dr. Julian Hill , Director at Ternes Scientific

 

These experts engaged in discussions focused on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) strategies, the role of critical minerals in future technologies, and how these sectors can work together to support education and social justice.

In the afternoon, the summit’s Critical Conversations moved from the boardroom to the cricket pitch for a T10 Cricket Tournament, raising much-needed funds for Western Australia’s underfunded country libraries. 

Attendees had the chance to play alongside some of Australia’s greatest cricketers, including:

  • Harry Moffitt, former SAS soldier and author of Eleven Bats
  • Brad Hogg, former Australian cricketer and Perth Scorchers champion
  • Justin Langer, former Australian international cricketer and coach
  • Chloe Piparo, captain of Western Australia’s women’s cricket team
  • Christina Matthews former CEO of WA Cricket and Australian cricketer
  • Adam Voges  head coach of Western Australia and the Perth Scorchers

 

This unique tournament blended sport and philanthropy, bringing participants together in a relaxed setting while continuing to support the cause of educational equity and Australian country libraries.

To add a touch of artistic brilliance, the summit featured a special musical performance by Blake Bowden, renowned Australian tenor. His performance added a layer of cultural enrichment to the day, reminding everyone of the diverse ways in which we can engage with education and community building.

The Critical Minerals, Mining, and ESG Summit 2024 marked the beginning of a new chapter for The LBW Trust and its mission to bridge the gap between resource wealth and educational opportunities. The event brought together leaders, policymakers and philanthropists committed to using Australia’s vast resources to create a more equitable future for all.
