About Prerana
Prerana, based in Bengaluru, India, supports highly deserving yet underprivileged students through tertiary education. They identify potential candidates through rigorous application and testing while students are still in high school.
Prerana provides comprehensive support through a two-year pre-university program and a 2-3 year undergraduate program. During this time, students benefit from studying at the Prerana facility, receiving mentoring, skills training, and access to various resources and nutritious meals.
Prerana’s selection process focuses on academically gifted students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, with criteria that include parental income of less than A$3,000 annually and residence in slum areas.
Detailed reports about each student’s background are provided to the LBW Trust.
The LBW Trust’s Partnership with Prerana
The LBW Trust collaborates closely with Prerana to facilitate scholarships and support for students. Students choose their university courses in Bangalore, and if accepted by both Prerana and the chosen institution, they receive a scholarship. Course fees range from A$30 to A$800 per year, with scholarships generally covering around 80% of the costs. The remaining amount is typically covered by students’ families or low-interest loans, with some exceptional cases receiving full scholarships.
The Trust administers the funds directly to the educational institutions and ensures that students maintain eligibility by achieving over 70% in their courses.
Additionally, the Trust provides funds for books, extra-curricular programs, and essential support services, including tutoring, mentoring, counselling and career guidance. Students receive meals where needed (often donated by a local temple), computer training, and job skills training, including employability skills, group discussions, interview preparation, aptitude classes and presentation skills. They also have opportunities to engage with local professionals and participate in orientation and summer camps funded by Prerana.
The holistic support offered by Prerana leads to significant improvements in students’ English proficiency, subject understanding, and career readiness.
Graduates from Prerana have been placed in prestigious companies with international stature, such as TCS, Accenture, HCL and Infosys, right after completing their professional courses. The high pass rate and employment outcomes of Prerana students demonstrate the success of this comprehensive approach, which addresses not only academic needs but also the health, welfare, and social capital challenges faced by these students.
