At The LBW Trust, we believe in the power of education to transform lives, and we are proud to share the inspiring journey of one of our own, Emilia Adonis. Emilia’s story is one of unexpected twists, growth and a deep sense of purpose, with SS4LS playing a pivotal role in shaping her path.

Starting with Sports and Recreation

Emilia’s academic journey began at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), where she pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Sports and Recreation and Exercise Sciences. While she enjoyed her studies, postgraduate education wasn’t initially on her radar. However, her curiosity about sports science and biokinetics sparked a new direction, leading her to explore Kinderkinetics at Stellenbosch University. There, she earned her Honours degree and uncovered a passion she never anticipated.

A Break and a Return to Learning

After her Honours, Emilia took a two-year break from academia, uncertain of her next steps. She considered pursuing a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), but circumstances held her back. Yet, her journey wasn’t over. Returning to UWC, she enrolled in a Master’s of Philosophy in Sports for Development program, focusing on how socio-economic status affects children’s gross motor skills. In April of this year, she graduated with her Master’s degree, a significant achievement in her academic journey.

An Unexpected Opportunity at SS4LS

The most unexpected chapter of Emilia’s story began when she joined SS4LS. What started as a role assisting in the kitchen with the dietitian following the COVID-19 pandemic soon turned into something much bigger. Ilona Philander, SS4LS’s wellness manager, offered Emilia the opportunity to assist with academic support. With an open heart and a willingness to embrace new challenges, Emilia accepted the offer, and her career with SS4LS took flight.

A Transformative Experience with SS4LS

At SS4LS, Emilia became the first full-time academic intern, watching firsthand as the academic department grew from supporting a handful of students to reaching 200 student-athletes. Her journey at SS4LS ignited a passion for academic support, particularly for student-athletes, and she witnessed how education could profoundly impact their lives.

Looking Ahead to a New Chapter

Today, Emilia is preparing to lead a similar program for student-athletes at a school in Stellenbosch. This exciting new chapter will allow her to share the skills and insights she gained through her time at SS4LS while continuing to expand her knowledge and make a difference in the lives of others.

Gratitude for the Journey

As we reflect on Emilia’s journey, we are reminded of the power of unexpected paths and how a willingness to embrace new opportunities can lead to life-changing growth. At LBW, we are incredibly proud of Emilia’s accomplishments and look forward to seeing her continue to thrive in the next chapter of her journey.

We are grateful to have been part of Emilia’s path, and we look forward to the many ways she will continue to inspire others. Here’s to the future—full of purpose, passion, and endless possibilities.
