CandleAid Lanka Celebrates a Milestone: Two LBW Trust Sponsored Students Awarded Scholarships by the University of Sydney

The LBW Trust is thrilled to announce that two of our CandleAid Lanka sponsored students have been awarded scholarships by the prestigious University of Sydney (USYD) to pursue Master’s Degrees starting in July 2024.

This remarkable achievement is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and academic excellence. It also highlights the crucial role played by the LBW Trust and Ms. Emma Bromley, who facilitated the scholarship application process with USYD.

The journey to these scholarships began with LBW Trust General Manager,  Emma Bromley’s initiative to direct a single scholarship opportunity from USYD to CandleAid Lanka.

After inviting applications, CandleAid shortlisted and interviewed candidates, forwarding the details of two outstanding students to USYD for final selection.

To our immense delight, Mr. Tim Field, Director of International at USYD, informed us that both students were accepted into the scholarship program.

Meet the Scholars

Y. Nadeera Ashani

Nadeera Ashani is studying for a Master of Agriculture and Environment at the University of Sydney. She graduated with second-class upper honours and a Gold Medal from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, where she completed a four-year bachelor’s degree in Plant Biotechnology.

Nadeera’s dedication to her studies is inspiring, especially considering her family circumstances. Her father is unemployed, her mother is a teacher and she has a younger sister awaiting university entrance.

Sachith Anjana Karunarathna

Sachith Karunarathna is pursuing a Master of Marine Science and Management at the University of Sydney. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries & Marine Sciences at the University of Ruhuna with First Class Honours.

Sachith’s academic journey is equally inspiring, with his father driving a three-wheeler to earn a living and his mother being unemployed. He has an older brother who is married, and his twin sister is awaiting employment.

Looking Forward

This milestone marks a significant step in Nadeera’s and Sachith’s academic and professional journeys. Their achievements pave the way for more scholarships and opportunities for our students, and we are confident that they will continue to excel in their chosen fields.

CandleAid Lanka, with the unwavering support of The LBW Trust, remains committed to empowering and supporting our students in their pursuit of excellence.
